"The Best Of UK Funky" - Mixed By DJ Cable

Fresh from dropping my UK Garage mixtape a few weeks back, I've decided to keep with the summer time vibes and release the next in the "Best Of" series. This time around, it's all about UK Funky.

Drake sampling Paleface & Kyla's "Do You Mind" was also one of the inspirations for digging into my crates and putting this together. This mix contains over 30 tracks, some of which you may or may not know, and even though it's not technically Funky, I've also included "One Dance" in there...because everyone seems to want to hear Drake, no matter what type of event it is.

Stream on the player below or download it HERE via my Facebook page. Please be sure to give it a "like" whilst you're there. I hope you enjoy the mix.

DJ Freeza "The Ramadance Mixtape"

Good mixtapes these days are few and far between. Everyone with access to social networking sites, Limewire and Tesco's cheap CDRs now thinks they're a DJ (no names mentioned), and the amount of crap mixtapes and event invites I'm bomarded with these days is ridiculous...

This mixtape, however, isn't shit. It's banging. for those not in the know, my boy DJ Freeza is part of Tomb Crew. You may know them from duppying various raves across the UK, and also over in Europe. He's just finished a promo mix for a new night in Essex called Ramdance, and you should all check it out below...

In his words:

"It’s one for fans of UK Garage, Dubstep, UK funky, Grime, and big Electro club tunes. I’ve gone for a real party energy, and I’m pretty pleased with it."

Get off the Bandwagon: House Music

NOTE: I'm not going to single out anyone in particular. If this applies to you...well...it obviously applies to you!

It's been a while since I've had a good rant on here. I would normally ignore it all and keep doing my own thing when it comes to bandwagons and the people that jump on it. However as each day goes by, I see more and more people jumping on the whole House thing, and to be honest, it really annoys me.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 12-18 months, "Funky" or "UK Funky" has taken the industry by storm. In some ways it's great, as record labels are now investing more in UK artists in general, and also taking notice of new talent. With an official compilation out now, and a couple of others on the way, it looks set to become the soundtrack to most people's summers. Although on the other hand, the constant bombardment of skanking tunes, the sheer amount of substandard product, and the fact that everyman and his dog is trying to make (and DJ) Funky has saturated the scene something silly, leaving us with a watered down pile of crap to sift through when it comes to finding new music.

K.I.G. & Gracious K both came with something original, and it worked well. They're good tracks. Now everyone thinks they can hijack someone's beat and come up with a dance that makes you look like a twat.

Crazy Cousinz, Attacca Pesante, Donaeo, Lil Silva, Ill Blu, Geeneus have all put out some great music. Now every bedroom DJ thinks they can do the same with a cracked copy of Fruityloops...and then put on crap event after crap event which I seem to get a million invites for on Facebook EVERY DAY.

However, what pisses me off the most is the DJs that all of a sudden dropped whatever they were normally spinning, in order to cash in on the genre and get try to get more bookings. Most of these people had no love (or knowledge) for House music at the start, so why pretend?

They're excuse? "Oh I've always been into House man, I'm now just trying to find my own sound." Are you bollocks! The main reason why you're spinning House music is mainly because of the popularity of Funky. So you've bought a few other joints off Beatport or Juno (or most likely downloaded from blogspots), and read up on what's hot on few forums...congratu-fuckin-lations, you're such a big boy/big gal House DJ.

I love it how they then act like they've spinning the genre for time, and strut around like they're some kind of House music connoisseur. Aside from the Electro & "Gutter/Wobble" House which I love, this Funky/Soulful/Deep thing isn't really for me. Saying that, I do play the bigger Funky tunes in some venues, because...well...that's my job as a DJ: to entertain and keep the crowd moving.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for exploring and discovering new genres and artists (you all know I play/mash many styles together), and new avenues with DJ-ing (Video-SL, Ableton Live, etc), but when you completely switch up your style just to cash in on the latest trend, that's some weak shit. Some fake shit, in fact.

I hate to think what the biters will latch onto next once the Funky hype dies off. I pray it's not Dubstep.

Anyways, if you're reading this, and I've offended you, I really couldn't care less. I'll keep doing my own thing while you can all ride the wagon 'til it breaks down.

Until then, get some originality.

Attacca Pesante "Make It Funky For Me" (Music Video)

One of the only UK Funky joints that I like...

Nice-looking video though, it's put me in the mood for a bbq...

Mingstar "Get Your Champagne" (Music Video)

If you've been stopping by the blog regularly, you'll have noticed that I have a pretty strong dislike for the amount of substandard UK Funky joints that teach me how to do some shit dance that looks like you're having an fit of some sorts...

Fortunately, this isn't one of those. Produced by Skitz Beatz, this joint has a pretty solid party vibe...Can definitely see people bubbling to this in a rave, unless they're too busy trying to do the "Jungle-Tribal-Migraine-Gully-Ringa Roses-Creeper" skank, with the "Heads, Shoulders, Knees & Running Man", or something as equally ridiculous...ahem...

Shouts to Mingstar for sending this one through.

Show Me The Blackberry! (Video)

"If you ain't got a pin it's a Facebook ting!" FLOL!

For a pisstake, this is actually pretty catchy. Although I'm sure it won't be long before someone swagger jacks this and we get another remedial dance such as the "Blackberry Skank", or something similar...

On a side note, Miss London aka "the princess of comedy" doesn't look too bad...I think it's the spandex...erm, yeah...

Via Dun Know Da Blogspot

BONUS! Maxwell D & LIl Silva "Blackberry Hype"

Sadly, this isn't a pisstake. The only good thing about this is the Lil Silva beat.

Migraine Skank (Video)

I posted this up a while back. I wasn't really feeling it at first, but yeh, it's grown on me. A lot in fact. It's actually quite big!

Although I won't be doing the dance, purely because I can't dance in general. That's why I'm a DJ...

Do The "Ringa Roses" Skank (Video)

This gets the gasface. Swagger jacking a sick beat (Footsteps' "Green Light") is okay, provided you do something dope with it. And this is far from dope...

I gotta agree with Mistajam, this shit's now become the new line dancing. I guess everyone now wants that "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes" money...

Spotted over @ DJ B's blog

BONUS! Whilst on the subject, here's the official video for "H.S.K.T."

Theophilus London "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes"

Just got this in the inbox from the man himself. Regular readers may remember that I posted up the video of the Theophilus London and Jesse Boykins III skanking out to "Bongo Jam" at SOB's in NYC.

I then got the heads up that he was gonna jump on "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes". Whilst Wale did his thing, dude smashed this beat to pieces...Big up Theophilus London! Be sue to check out his Myspace for more audio.

Listen/Get: Theophilus London "Head, Shoulders..."

I wonder who's gonna be next to jump on this beat?

Wale "African Warrior" Freestyle

Only a week after killing it over "Heads, Shoulders, Knees & Toes", Semtex brings us another Wale freestyle, as he goes in over Donaeo's "African Warrior". For those not in the know, the original is one of the biggest UK Funky joints out at the moment...You play this anywhere, it's game over.

Listen/Get: Wale "African Warrior" Freestyle

Big up Semtex, probably the hardest working DJ in the UK.

Whilst we're on the subject of US artists over UK beats, shout out to Theophillus London, who should hopefully be dropping his "Heads, Shoulders..." freestyle real soon.

UK Funky Reaches the US (Video)

Following on from Wale's "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes" freestyle, which Semtex leaked over the weekend, it seems that US is getting down with Funky/Afro House/UK Funky/Funky House (delete where appropriate).

The above video features Theophillus London & Jesse Boykins III skanking out to "Bongo Jam" by Crazy Cousinz during a show at SOB's. Word has it that he'll be doing his own version of "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes" too.
