Skillz "Rap Up 2008"

Just had to post this before I'm off out tonight....

Listen/Get: Skillz "Rap Up 2008"

FLOL @ the R Kelly & Young Buck lines. This one's full of quotes!

End of The Year: 2008

As we say Game Over to 2008, and welcome in the New Year, I've decided to give a little recap of what's happened this year, along with some of my personal achievements....

First up, history was made this year, with Barack Obama winning the US presidential election (I hope you all downloaded the "Block Obama" Mini Mix). Hip Hop played a very important role in this election, and helped get to everyone out there to vote. I believe that Obama's the right man for the job.

Musically, 2008 was a pretty good year. For Hip Hop, the album of the year for me has to be "Paper Trail" by T.I. This was closely followed by Ludacris' "Theater Of The mind". Those albums are two solid pieces of work, and have been on constant rotation since copping them. Lil' Wayne also proved himself to be the hardest working rapper out there, there's no doubt about that. Other notable releases include The Cool Kids' "Bake Sale" EP, and Common's "Universal Mind Control".

On the other hand, 2008 was full of unnecessary/irrelevant beef (turning the genre into a bit of a pantomime sometimes), autotune, more crap dances (Stanky Legg, anyone?), and also the word "swagger". I somehow hope the above are banned in 2009.

The UK music scene was in good health this year, with artists such as Benga, Dizzee Rascal, Estelle, Donaeo, Bloc Party & M.I.A. all putting out great music. Props to Dizzee for getting to #1 just on legal downloads alone (on an independent label too).

Now, over to Dance music...Drum & Bass has never been healthier: Brookes Brothers, Hazard, Nu:Tone, Blame, High Contrast, and Chase & Status came with some of the best D&B I've heard in a long while. Album of the year goes to Chase & Status, who not only gave us a quality slice of D&B, but also showed that could easily make some disgusting Dubstep! "Eastern Jam" smashed up the dancefloor at practically every venue I played it, whilst "Running", with it's vocals and 80's influenced synths is an awesome joint.

Diplo, A-Trak, Craze, Sinden, Hervé and Fake Blood also put out some excellent work this year too....

Now, 2008 has also been a great year for me as a DJ. Not only was I able to represent the UK at both the DMC World Championships (shout to Sally) & the IDA World Finals, I also won the "Alizé Remixed 2008" DJ Competition (special thanks to everyone at Uproar for making the Tour night happen at Paper). I was also able to support a lot of great artists this year, such as Twista, Bobby Valentino and of course, Grandmaster Flash. To top it all off, iDJ Magazine pointed me out as one of the DJs to watch out for. I guess the hard work does pay off!

To everyone who reads the blog, I wish you all a happy and safe New Year. See you in '09.

DJ Cable's Weekly Mix #52

Once again, it's time for another Weekly Mix...Well in fact, it's the last ever Weekly Mix of the series...But don't fret! I'll be back with more mixes next year....just not every week lol!

So for this week's final mix, and due to Khal's recommendation, I went in with a nice selection of D&B for your ears...Jump up, Liquid, Disco, Vocals...It's all there. Artists featured included Hazard, Brookes Brothers, Total Science, and Chase & Status. I also threw in a forgotten classic from High Contrast too....

Lastly...I'd like to thank all of those who downloaded my mixes over the year, to the bloggers who posted them up (Bluntwun, Khal, Krakmuzik), and to everyone who's joined the Facebook Group, and shown support. It's definitely been a fun thing to do (although sometimes a little stressful!), but next year I'll be focusing a lot more on production and full-length mixtapes....

So....52 weeks, 52 mixes, no tracks repeated (remixes excluded) & 100,000+ downloads. Who else can step up to the challenge?

Until next time, Happy New Year and all the very best for 2009.

See you on the other side.

"Planet Of The Apes" x Hot Toys

Hot Toys are set to produce a limited number of figures from cult series "Planet Of The Apes". The 1/6th scaled characters include General Ursus, Gorilla Soldier, and Gorilla Captain; all ranging from 12″ to 13″ in height. Expected to be available for purchase in early 2009. The detailing on these are dope, and contain nice little touches such as the gloves.

I've always been a fan of the series. The clip where Charles Heston's character discovers the Statue of Liberty is quite eerie, and overall, the whole film is a classic piece of work.

However, not a lot can be said for Tim Burton's remake from 2001, where the ending made no sense whatsoever. If anyone can provide me with a good theory/explanation, hit me up!

More Pics:

50 Cent on Turkish “Deal Or No Deal” (Video)

Ron Browz "Jumping Out Da Window" (Video)

I liked "Pop Champagne". It's been a staple track in my Hip Hop sets for a minute now, but this new joint from Ron Browz is awful. I don't know which is worse...this shit or "Da Stanky Legg".

My Christmas wish for this year? No more crap dances, and certainly no more autotune. Please.

UK Turntablism: DJ Quest

Just randomly came across this on Youtube: A a scratch tutorial by DJ Quest (UK), which was put out on a cover DVD for "Future Music" shortly after he won the '03 DMC UK Final. I had to laugh when he goes to explain some basic patterns, and then does the crab scratch...

I may have to persuade him to battle again.

Rosenberg's Rountable: "Arab Money" (Video)

As you may well know, Busta's recent club hit "Arab Money" has come under fire for coming across as being demeaning to Arabs & Muslims. It even caused a bit of a storm over here recently, with a certain DJ getting suspended on Galaxy FM for playing said track.

Peter Rosenberg speaks to Mazzi, and a couple of other artists about the song, and gets their take on it...Very interesting interview.

My thoughts:

When I first heard the record I thought here may be a bit of a problem, and after chatting to a few people I know from Arab/Muslim backgrounds, the general reaction seemed to be okay; It's been requested by a lot people people from all different backgrounds in the clubs, and everyone seems to get down with the accompanying dance as well....

I've always been respectful of other cultures, religions & customs, and so after watching this and reading up on more of the facts, I'll be sending this track to the recycle bin....Granted, I've posted the video up previously on here, and have played this out - mainly because the beat is solid (let's face it...it's definitely not some of Busta's best bars) - but seeing as the final version contains extracts from the Qur'an, I don't want to offend anyone by playing/supporting this record...

From what I've read online as well, Busta's pulling the track completely from radio and retail.

Your thoughts?

I still need to cop myself a pair of the Reverse Jams as well...

Sway Feat. Akon "Silver & Gold" (Music Video)

Back from Poland!

Sorry for the delay chaps, but after 2 days' worth of no sleep, traveling to Poland, and fitting in 3 gigs...I've been a little under the weather...

Anyhow, the IDA World Finals were erm....pretty interesting to say the least....Shiftee was robbed of 1st place, whilst Switch didn't even make it past the prelims (WTF?!)....I'll leave it at that...

Other than that, the competition was well-organized, and was one of the nicest venues I've performed at this year - A giant cinema in the middle of a shopping mall in Warsaw, with free beer, Red Bull and canapes....tasty....

Unfortunately my camera battery died after taking the above photo, so I'll have to wait until Loop has uploaded his pics.

Ill Bill is a Brooklyn hiphop legend who has worked with everyone from DJ Premier to Bad Brains, MF Doom to Slayer; a fierce MC with an intellect to match. After solidifying his big dog status on the underground with his former group Non Phixion’s classic The Future is Now, Bill has since been grinding out solo projects (incl. 2008’s amazing The Hour of Reprisal) that showcase his intricate flows and subject matter that falls somewhere between the best socio-political efforts of the 90’s and his brother Necro’s psychosis fuelled violence and bongo flick narratives . The self proclaimed ‘2011 Melle Mel’ is also one of the founders of La Coka Nostra and on this night is joined by mic bludgeoner Big Left also from the aforementioned supergroup (also includes House of Pain and others).

Tonight's Grime & Hip Hop Picks (Videos)

DJ Mondie "Pull Up Dat"

B.M.D. "North Weezie"

Youngstar Feat. MC Viper "Pulse X"

The above joints absolutely killed it last night. Some other DJ before me had played all the obvious bangers (intentionally or not, it's all good...I guess some DJs feel that intimidated when I'm on the same bill as them, eh? Haha!), so me being me, I reached deep and pulled these anthems out from the crate(s). You know how I do...

Hip Hop-wise, these joints smashed the place apart:

Juelz Santana "Santana's Town (Dipset)

Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz Feat. Lil Scrappy "What U Gonna Do"

Clipse "Grindin"

"Patty cake, patty cake, I'm the baker's man..."

I couldn't care what ayone says....My swagger level was definitely set on max last night. Essex Uni wasn't ready....

?uestlove's Top Tips for 2009 (Video)

Very interesting interview. ?uestlove reckons 2009 will be Jim Jones & Ron Browz' year...I mean, "Pop Champagne" is a certified banger, but c'mon, Jimmy & Browz?! I dunno man, that's a fairly far-out decision...

For me, it'll most likely be Wale or Kid Cudi. As far as major players go, I got the feeling that Em's forthcoming album will be straight crack, whilst "Blueprint 3" is shaping up to be very solid indeed...

Unless Dre finally drops "Detox", Eminem & Jay will own 2009...

Your thoughts?

P.S. I agree on Twitter being the new thing to take off....

The Game Feat. Ne-Yo "Camera Phone"

Wale "Nike Boots" (Music Video)

If you're on one of those Digital Mailing Lists, chances are you would have come across this joint last autumn, along with the pretty dope "W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E." The "Nike Boots" remix featuring Lil Wayne killed it.

If you're just getting hip to Wale, he's gonna be one to watch out for in 2009. There's an impressive list of cameos in the video, from Kid Capri, to Bun B, 9th Wonder, Young Guru, Raheem DeVaughn, Angel Lola Luv, Young Chris and Neef, Grafh, UCB, Tabi Bonney and Beat Your Feet Kings.

On the subject of Nike boots, I'm more of an Air Max 1 person if I'm honest.

At least the soundtrack to "Notorious" should be dope.

Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes (Music Video)

"Ladies let me see you get down low!"

For my overseas readers, the "Funky House" (Note: It's actually Afro-House/Afrobeat) movement has been taking the UK by storm this past year, what with tracks by DJ NG, Ear Dis, Crazy Cousinz & DJ Mujava tearing down raves.

This new joint from K.I.G's DJ Dexter is next in line to make some serious noise. It's simple, it's catchy, and the beat's pretty solid.

Expect to see a million and one different dance tutorials plastered over Youtube. I'll stick to my diddy bop.

BONUS! Get it while it's here:

Busta Rhymes Feat. Ron Browz "Arab Money" (Mucic Video)

Redman & Oh No "Lay You Out"

I got hold of this Oh No-produced banger last week, but have been a bit slack posting up new joints the past couple of days. My bad!

Anyhow, to celebrate the re-release of "Street Fighter II" on X-Box Live & PS Network, a "Street Fighter Underground Remix" mixtape has been put together. Apparently every joint samples the game extensively, from the soundtracks to the sound effects.

Must get hold of this mixtape!

Get: Redman & Oh No "Lay You Out"

Swiped from RTD, via Metal Lungies.

BONUS! Here's the trailer/commerical for the forthcoming "Street Fighter IV"

EPMD Feat. Redman "Yo"

Brand new heat from EPMD, featuring Funk Doctor Spock.

Taken from the "Unfinished Business" LP. Go get it. It's dope.

KRS & Kid Capri launch TV channel for Real Hip Hop

They've found a gap in the market and this actually seems like a potential rival to BET (not even gonna mention MTV).

As you probably know the commercial Hip Hop market hasn't been at it's best recently, with generic rappers coming out with generic tracks on the whole; but as with anything, if you look a bit deeper below the chart targeted material you'll find that the Hip Hop scene is alive and well. This is where KRS, the man I like to describe as Hip Hop personified, comes in to play alongside veteran DJ, Kid Capri. Check out this interview with himself and DJ Kid Capri on Fox (!), chatting with a guy who seems like he knows less about Hip Hop than your boss' granny.

Jay-Z Feat. Santogold "Brooklyn Go Hard"

Taken from the soundtrack to the forthcoming Biggie biopic "Notorious". Produced by Kanye. Don't even try to sleep!

Damn, I can't wait for "Blueprint 3".
