The New Step (Early Dubstep & Grime Documentary) (2003)

One of the posters over at Grime Forum kindly threw this up on Youtube the other day.

Originally aired in 2003 on BBC Radio 1, and featuring interviews from Plastician, Oris Jay and even a then 17 year old Benga, it gives an interesting insight into the birth of 8 bar/early Grime and Dubstep. Highlights also include challenging Benga to make an 8 bar riddim in 10 minutes on Music 2000 for the Sony Playstation.

It's great to look back on the scene in 2003, and to see how it's developed over the past 10 years.

Plastician Feat. Doctor "Bad Like Us"

This is too much! The original instrumental ("Retro") has been doing the rounds on dub for a minute now, and definitely smashes up any rave each time it gets dropped.

Plastician has enlisted the help of Doctor to add that extra energy to the tune, which is forthcoming on Trouble & Bass in the not too distant future. Turn this one up loud.

Plastician "Sound That Speaks Volumes 2010"

The one and only Plastician is back with his annual mix (now under a new name), packed full of new and unreleased Dubstep pressure, as well as few Street FIghter sound effects for good measure!
Here's what he has to say:

"As many of you may or may not know, every year in May I give away a free mix which were always referred to as the May Mix. I've done this annually for some time now, and as this year will be the 5th annual mix, I decided to do something special.

I decided to rename the mix series as well, a lot of people stumble across the May Mix as its found its way around the internet over the years, and I'm often asked "where is this month's mix" or "where is the october 2008 mix". To avoid confusion and hopefully to help stamp the fact that this is an annual occurence, I've decided to name the mix "Sound That Speaks Volumes" this year is the 2010 edition obviously!!

And, to mark the occasion of the 5th anniversary, I will be pressing copies of the mix for the first time onto CD. As a thank you to everyone who has enjoyed the May mixes over the years, and helped spread the mix online to thousands of ears every year, I will be pressing 10,000 copies of the mix and they will be given away completely free.

Big up everyone for the support over the last 5 years and I hope you enjoy "Sound That Speaks Volumes 2010" as much as you've enjoyed the previous annual mixes."

Plastician @ Optic tomorrow night!

Just got put on to this from Ben/Hotpoint @ Optic...Plastician featuring Dizzee Rascal, Newham Generals (D Double E & Footsie), Skepta & Jammer at Matter, which is owned by the peeps behind Fabric. Seriously, when was the last time you saw/heard a lineup like this?!

Seeing the top 5 emcees in the game perform together is big, but it's all about Dizzee, who completely murkalized the dance. Check the part where he spits "Stop Dat" over Caspa's "My Pet Monster". It's too much...Definitely one of those "wish I was there" moments...
